LEARNERS
You need to be licenced in order to learn to drive. For most people this means obtaining a GB provisional licence, application forms at main Post Offices. If you hold a licence issued in another country then check its’ validity for learning in this country. For full details on licences check the DVLA website. There are two Tests to pass before a full licence can be obtained. The Theory, which is computer based consisting of multiple choice questions and Hazard Perception video clips. Once you have successfully passed that then the Practical Test can be booked, at which to demonstrate your safe driving to a DSA examiner. For full details on Tests, bookings etc check the DSA website.
Our instructors provide tuition and practice in the complex skills of driving, not just to pass the Test, but as a preparation for a lifetime of safe driving. They are aware that you may be nervous and unsure to begin with but by patience and understanding will build up your confidence.
Though many learners can only allocate an hour per week for practical instruction, the ideal situation would be a couple of hours weekly. Our instructors would recommend an initial two hour session to get you started and again as Test time approaches. You may wish to transfer to learning and taking the Test in your own car – just ask.
Along side the acquisition of practical skills there is the need to have an understanding of other aspects of the car and road, such as will be examined in the Theory Test. You can get help for this from your instructor and books, CD-ROMs, videos, etc can be found at good bookshops or over the net at TSO. Ask your instructor for recommendations.
As to how long learning takes and how many lessons you need, this is very individual. However there is no doubt that professional instruction and time for plenty of practice means not only a better chance of your passing first time but also being more able to cope afterwards for the rest of your motoring life!

PASS PLUS
This is designed by the Driving Standards Agency, as a structured course for the newly qualified driver. Giving extra experience at a time when statistically one is most likely to have an accident, it can also save you money on insurance! Pass Plus takes in types of driving perhaps not experienced as a learner; in towns, on rural roads, all weathers, motorways and dual carriageways, in the dark.
Once successfully completed, in a minimum of six hours, the DSA issue a certificate which can be used to claim discount on insurance from participating companies. You will find full details at the Pass Plus website.
‘ So even if you didn’t learn with us, DIRECT would welcome you to Pass Plus!’
The Pass Plus course can be taken at any time during your driving career but doesn’t necessarily carry insurance savings. For more individualized sessions Refreshers may be the answer.
Fee for a 6 hour course is £135
REFRESHERS
Intended for those who already have a full licence these sessions are client led, focussing on your particular needs. From a one hour one-off post-Test motorway experience, practice in parking, complex roundabouts, to more time, if for example a number of years has elapsed between passing your Test and obtaining a car. Allow one of our instructors to build up your confidence, brush up rusty skills, sharpen your traffic awareness. Perhaps you would like to use your own car – just ask.
You may have moved countries and be more used to driving on the right, a brief session, with an instructor, could help you transfer to the left hand side. (To check if your foreign licence is valid see the DVLA website ).
‘So let DIRECT refresh (reinvigorate, make up to date) your driving skills!’
Fees charged at the same rate as Learners.
